When the movie was made (1985 / 1986) the makers were our age, in their thirties, and the young actors the same age as our kids (11 and 13 at the time) and I suppose we had had enough of kids of that age, so a movie about more kids didn't really appeal.
Of course there are themes of male bonding, dysfunctional families, sharing problems; but what struck me most was what different lives twelve year olds had fifty years ago. Stand By Me.
