Black liberation movements in this country have created room, space, and leadership mostly for Black heterosexual, cisgender men — leaving women, queer and transgender people, and others either out of the movement or in the background to move the work forward with little or no recognition.
For Patrisse Cullors, it was more than love.

I found solace in reading authors like Audre Lorde and bell hooks, who would become my activist staples—their words helped me grow up and taught me how to be bold and courageous.

Darnell Moore and Patrisse Cullors organized a national ride during Labor Day weekend that year. So I never felt compelled to get married—it just didn't seem important.

I was introduced to queer conferences, pride, and spaces that allowed me and my community to explore our queerness and blackness in ways that shaped our identity and social-justice practice.I read everything and anything related to being queer. I knew marriage was not the answer to changing the conditions for poor black queer folks. We hardly saw her.At that time—the early nineties—marriage was something politicians on both sides of the aisle touted as a silver bullet to fix to the poverty and violence that permeated black communities.
