But, I’m happy that I’m able to make the old lid work by changing a few parts.I am replacing the petcock with a vent pipe and pressure regulator weight. I’m going to be looking forward to your posts! You can take the over pressure valve apart to clean it. What I was told – I think from AA, but it’s been a long while – is that inside the center of the plug is a bit of metal that will melt or blow out at a temperature or pressure that is too high.

Thanks!I have seen small sets of brushes that are meant for getting old finishes out of wooden crevices in refinishing projects. Some things need 5 pounds presssure (psi), some things need 10 and some things need 15.

I know you’ve figured it out, but I’m going to include your question and my reply for reference to others.The over pressure plugs tend to get very hard over time and require increasing amounts of force to remove. I replaced that old over-pressure device with a new All-American petcock.

I’m not as tied to the canner as when it has the gauge.I love my Mirror canners that jiggle.

They actually recommend gently prying with a flat-bladed screw driver inserted at an angle at the point where the knobs are.
